Massive surf destroys sand dunes in Jeffreys Bay

Local homeowners and the Kouga Municipality are counting the cost of the damage to the beachfront of Jeffreys Bay following the huge waves that battered the southern coastline of South Africa last week.

Several luxury houses along the beachfront of Jeffreys Bay were threatened by the storm surf that co-incided with an abnormally high spring tide.

Residents were feverishly packing sand bags along the devastated dunes to try protect their properties ahead of another expected ocean surge that could cause more big waves in the Jeffreys bay area.

Dunes that had been rehabilitated by the SSF at the bottom Point car park were also washed away by the swell. The Foundation has plans to further rehabilitate the area, so luckily the damage is not critical.
